Few countries in the world have such a comprehensive healthcare system as we do here in Austria, Germany, or Switzerland. Africa It has some of the least developed healthcare systems in the world. In numbers, that means 35 million people without adequate medical care… in [country name] alone. Kenya, one of the more developed countries in the region.

For comparison only:

  • In Austria, virtually everyone has access to the health system… in Kenya, only 211,300 of the population are insured in any form.
  • In Kenya, more than 40% of the clinics and hospitals are profit-oriented and therefore not accessible to many publicly insured people (and other facilities have difficulty retaining good staff).
  • In Austria, there are approximately 34 hospitals and specialized facilities per 1 million inhabitants… in Kenya, there are only 1.1 per 1 million inhabitants. However, Kenya has nearly 11,000 small clinics, practices, and pharmacies.
  • In Austria there are approximately 870 hospital beds per 100,000 inhabitants… in Kenya only 165 (some of which you wouldn't voluntarily lie on).
  • In Austria there are approximately 565 doctors per 100,000 inhabitants… in Kenya only 14 (in Tanzania not even 2).
  • Under these circumstances Christian Health Ministries (Hospitals and clinics, as well as other church-run health services) play a particularly important role. 15% of the hospitals are or were mission hospitals. The proportion is much higher for small clinics.

These Christian health services are suffering from extreme resource scarcity…

  • no trained personnel
  • Patients and insurance systems that cannot pay
  • Limited access to overpriced medications
  • outdated technology and equipment that are not maintained
  • overburdened administrative staff and processes
  • declining donations from abroad
