Winni and Sylvia are two young women who gave us a wonderfully fresh and lively insight into cultural differences during our organization's (SIM) orientation days. They explained, for example, that gifts are not customary in Kenya. A Kenyan woman wouldn't know what to do with cut flowers; a jar of sugar would be much better, and instead of a card, a few eggs. Anyone who knows our girls knows they really enjoy making gifts. A few hours later, they came back with two handmade envelopes and gave them to the two women because they liked them. It was lovely to see Sylvia return the next morning with two cards and a bracelet to bring them joy – quite unlike what's customary in her own culture.
