…how a vision became a mission
When I first came to Kenya in 2019, one thought kept recurring: the need for spaces for inner healing – offerings that go deeper and lead people on their healing journey into the presence of God.
This longing became a vision that God made a reality, step by step. What began with a simple question to my spiritual mother in Europe – „"Would you be willing to start something in Africa?"“ This evolved into a step of faith. It was the courage to venture into something completely new and the trust that God himself would provide the right people and resources. The first Soul Care Retreat finally took place in May 2022.
The Heart Garden
Imagine your heart as a garden. Some gardens are vibrant and full of bloom, others are overgrown, wild, or parched. We all long for a garden where fruit and beauty flourish and strong trees can take root. But a garden cannot tend to itself—it needs a gardener. It's the same with our hearts.
This image of the "heart garden" became the central theme of our Soul Care Retreats in Kenya. Around 90 men and women participated – many of them at a turning point in their lives, uncertain about the future, and carrying burdens they could barely bear alone.
Through teaching sessions, role-playing, and periods of silence, participants were invited to honestly examine the state of their hearts. On what soil does their life grow? Are there thorns of fear choking tender plants? Are there heavy stones of trauma blocking the way, rendering parts of the garden barren? Have walls of self-protection been built so high that even God's goodness can barely penetrate them?
The stories we heard were often raw and harrowing: abuse, years of humiliation, betrayal, fear, and shame. For some, it was the first time someone had truly listened to them—carefully and without judgment. In this safe space, tears flowed, hearts opened, and pain was allowed to surface.
And something wonderful happened: What began with weeping and despair gradually transformed into peace. As Jesus says: „"If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."“ We were privileged to witness profound healing and true freedom. Some participants reported such profound changes – especially within their families – that they could only describe them as miracles.
What the participants say:
„"The garden of my heart was full of bitterness, shame, and anger—even self-hatred. I tried to take my own life. And as a pastor in a small community, the consequences were especially difficult and isolating. But God healed me. I brought my shame to the cross.".
I have never experienced the presence of God as I have in the last few days.“ (Kenyan pastor)
One participant was practically begged to attend; she accepted three times and then canceled three times. Here's what she said:
I didn't want to come, but so many people said I needed it. God told me I should rest, but I felt I didn't deserve it, that I wasn't enough.
The Lord asked me, "Why don't you want my peace?" I've been a Christian since 1992, but there was always a blockage, and I realized it was my self-worth. I've always deeply hated myself, and the root cause is that I can't handle mistakes or coming in second. What I've learned is that I've never actually said to myself, "I love you."„

Thanks to loyal supporters and a dedicated team, even people without financial means can participate. We are grateful to be part of his work and to be able to help tend his children's "heart gardens".
What began as a vision has today become a growing ministry: a place where hearts are healed, lives are renewed, and the hope of Christ can be experienced in a very practical way.
