Poverty is a complex issue with many causes, and trying to understand the poor people around us and to act appropriately ourselves is part of our daily lives here. However, we repeatedly hear certain statements about poverty and the poor in Europe and Kenya: "the poor are to blame themselves," "this could be solved so easily," "they're just lazy and a bit stupid.".
We strongly disagree with such statements. This does not reflect our experience. The friendly, intelligent, and hardworking people we meet are struggling with incredible challenges and horrific situations. They are usually not to blame and are often hopeful, optimistic, and deeply committed to improving their lives and the lives of their children. We, the "wealthy," can learn a great deal from them.
This video has nothing to do with Banda Health or Naomi's Village, but it offers a glimpse into the lives of over 5 million people in Nairobi. It also shows what's possible with less than a thousand euros. With your help, we were able to assist many such families (on a smaller scale) during the most difficult Covid times last year. Thank you!
